Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question: HI there, nanybody knows if woodpecker uses this feeder? Thank you! And do doves use it ? I don't want doves. Thank you!

Answer: I have the squirrel buster mini (older version) on the upper deck. Doves cannot use this feeder as they are big and cannot sit on the four perches provided. Woodpeckers (big and small) cling onto the feeder and family of cardinals (big and small) sit on the perches to feed all the time. This is the newer version of the mini and is better constructed.
  • Question: Can I put anykind of bird food in this feeder

Answer: We recommend black oil sunflower seed; it is a great source of energy for the birds and won't clog our feeders. Feel free to contact us at 1-800-856-5685 for more information, our office hours are Monday-Friday, 9:00-5:30 EST.
  • Question: How many small birds may feed at one time?

Answer: 4 perches, but you probably won't see 4 birds at a time. Just for a few seconds, we've seen 3. They either scare each other away or distract each other. Usually 1 or sometimes 2 on our feeder.
  • Question: It does not look like it will protect the seed from rain.

Answer: Although the picture would not suggest that the seeds are protected, they are protected by the body of the feeder. In strong, driving rain the seeds at the base might become wet, but nothing like the ordinary tube feeders. It protects about as well as can be designed.
  • Question: Does this feeder keep away Starlings?

Answer: We have had a fairly small female starling come to this feeder, but only once or twice. Don't think a big one would be able to use it.
  • Question: We had a similar feeder (coated steel) that rusted and fell apart after a year or two. For folks who have it, how is this feeder holding up long-term?

Answer: I got a mini version of this years ago. It worked well keeping the birds out but needed refilling daily. Refilling took 2 hands and was not worth the effort so i stopped using but it stayed on the open deck, fell in the snow and in general mis treated and left to the new england weather for a few years. Yes there are some signs of rust but i am currently using again. For what it is worth I have several Brome bird feeders and have found the company stands behind there product completely. I have several Brome feeders for over 5 years...they sit out all year long and rust is not a problem. I have several classic models...they work well keeping squirrels from eating all the bird seed which is not to say that the squirrels every give up... Rust has never been a problem with any of the Brome feeders I own even after many years of hanging outside for several years 24/7 all year long. Hope this helps.
  • Question: Will Blue Jays be able to feed from this bird feeder or are they too heavy? I don't see jays often in my area and would like to attract them.

Answer: In the pacific northwest we only get stellars jays. They are considerably heavier than blue jays. I have my bird feeder hanging from a wrought iron plant stand that has three hooks for hanging baskets. I use this for hanging the squirrel buster bird feeder and two suet cages. I have seen the stellars jay holding onto the wrought iron stand and leaning into the bird feeder and grabbing some black oil sunflower seeds. I believe they are too heavy for the feeder. I know it is adjustable but have not tried to adjust it. I googled the weight of a blue jay and the weight of an adult squirrel. The blue jay is 70 to 100 grams and the adult squirrel around 125 grams. So you should be able to adjust it to eliminate the squirrel and still attract the blue jay. Make sure you do research to find out the best type of food for the blue jay.
  • Question: Our squirrels have chewed through our plastic feeder. Has anyone experienced squirrels chewing through the plastic to get at the seeds?

Answer: I've had this feeder for many years. The squirrels do not chew through it. As someone else said, they eat the seeds the birds knock on the ground. I've also seen squirrels hang upside down from the top holding onto the side and eating from the feeder without standing on the clips and closing it. They're smart.
  • Question: what do you all mount your feeder on?

Answer: I hung mine on a very thin branch, on a very long wire or elastic cord, both of which creates a very bouncy, shaky situation for the squirrels. I also added a hard plastic some on top of the feeder so they can't reach the feeder cage even if they can stretch down the length of the wire. The dome seems to have helped.
