SHOUT! FACTORY Blu-ray Editorial Review
**** "When Marnie Was There" stands as a poignant farewell from Studio Ghibli, immersing audiences in a beautifully crafted coming-of-age tale tinged with supernatural elements. The film's animation quality meets the high standards set by the studio, delivering breathtaking visuals that showcase the tranquil beauty of the countryside. Viewers resonate with the heartfelt camaraderie between Anna and Marnie, two girls navigating their emotions and pasts to forge an extraordinary friendship. The narrative artfully balances themes of joy, love, loss, and the mysteries of love, evoking a range of sentiments that ultimately culminate in a touching conclusion that may bring tears to the eyes. The English voice cast, featuring talents like Hailee Steinfeld and Kathy Bates, adds layers to the character development, enriching the engagement for both children and adults. Critics have debated the film's status within the Ghibli canon, labeling it a "minor Ghibli" work, but many viewers feel it deserves recognition as a unique and impactful contribution that stands on its own merits. In a world where Studio Ghibli's legacy comes to a close, "When Marnie Was There" offers a fitting tribute, ensuring that the studio's spirit of animation endures in the hearts of its fans. **
