The biography "The New Negro: The Life of Alain Locke" has received mixed yet mostly positive reviews. The book is described as very detailed and lengthy, overflowing with information about Alain Locke and other historical figures of the early twentieth century. It offers extensive insight into the Harlem Renaissance and is Considered a comprehensive resource for studying this era. The author is commended for presenting Locke as a flawed individual, not shying away from the troubling aspects of his life. The biography is praised for providing deep insights into Locke's thoughts on racism and culture, and his influence on African American intellectual history. It also delves into his complex relationships and personal struggles. However, some readers have noted that the extensive academic discussions in the book might be overwhelming for casual readers and could be better suited for philosophers or academic researchers. While the book is highly regarded for its depth of information, some readers have mentioned the absence of references to Alain Locke in the autobiographies of his contemporaries, which raises questions about his place in history.
