About This Item
Introducing the TAMIYA 32589 1/48 German Tank Destroyer Elefant Plastic Model Kit, a highly detailed replica of the formidable German Heavy Tank Destroyer. At a smaller 1/48 scale, this model kit is packed with extensive detail, thanks to the meticulous research conducted by Tamiya's designers who relied on their experience in crafting the renowned 1/35 scale version. The result is a true-to-life representation that captures the essence of the original Elefant. The development of the full-size Elefant tank is a fascinating case study in weapons development. Initially, the chassis was designed by Porsche as part of the competition for the Tiger I tank.
Although Porsche showed great confidence in its design by preparing 100 chassis prototypes, it was ultimately not chosen. However, Hitler ordered that the leftover chassis be repurposed into the Elefant tank, leading to the production of 90 examples by May 1943. With armor plates up to an impressive 200mm thick and outfitted with a powerful long-caliber 8.8cm gun, the Elefant was a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. This German Tank Destroyer served the German troops until the end of World War II.
