- Didier Eribon and his siblings place their mother, who is slowly losing both her physical and mental independence, in a nursing home. However, for the old woman who does not want this, the shock of entering the nursing home becomes very severe and she dies within a few weeks... Didier Eribon continues his personal and theoretical research, which he started in his book titled Return to Reims after his father's death, following the death of his mother. In The Life, Old Age and Death of a Common Woman, it deals with old age and disease, our relationship with the elderly and death, and the experience of aging, based on what her mother experienced. He questions the care conditions of people in need of care. It shows that the reason it is difficult for us to think about the experience of aging is because it is an extreme experience in Western philosophy and all concepts of philosophy are based on the exclusion of old age. While Eribon deals with his mother's life in all its complexity, especially the periods when she was a cleaner, a worker, and a retiree, from her participation in strikes to her obsessive racism, she also questions her old age in its political context: How can people who have lost their mobility and ability to speak and therefore cannot say “biz” take action? If no one speaks on their behalf to make their voices heard, can the elderly speak? Show more
